QuarkImmedia™ Viewer for Macintosh and Power Macintosh is one of two components of Quark’s forthcoming multimedia and Internet design software, QuarkImmedia. QuarkImmedia Viewer is a stand-alone application that lets you interact with robust QuarkImmedia projects over the Internet or on a local CD–ROM or hard disk. You don’t need QuarkImmedia or QuarkXPress™ to view and interact with projects created with QuarkImmedia.
Important
To use QuarkImmedia Viewer to view projects over the Internet, you need an Internet connection. You must also have a unique IP (Internet Protocol) address; this can either be a permanent IP address, or a “dynamic” IP address that is temporarily assigned to your computer each time you connect to the Internet.
If you have an Internet connection, you should download the latest version of QuarkImmedia Viewer by connecting to one of the following sites:
Once you have QuarkImmedia Viewer installed (see below), you can use the following URL to connect to a Web site created using QuarkImmedia:
http://www.quark.com/immedia
QuarkImmedia Viewer is not necessary to run the prototype projects on this CD because each project contains an embedded QuarkImmedia Viewer.
NOTE: QuarkImmedia Viewer may not work properly on a Power Macintosh computer if Virtual Memory is turned on in the Memory control panel. If you have trouble launching QuarkImmedia Viewer or opening a project over the Internet, turn Virtual Memory off, restart your computer, and try again.
Please note that this is a preliminary version of QuarkImmedia Viewer, not the full-featured final release. Not all features are necessarily operational. The software is provided “as is” for demonstration and testing purposes only. Quark makes no warranties, express or implied, concerning the application. We specifically do not warrant that QuarkImmedia Viewer will operate uninterrupted or error-free. WE DISCLAIM ALL WARRANTIES OF FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE AND MERCHANTABILITY. Accordingly, the application should not be used for actual production.
Duplication of any files on this CD, in whole or in part, is strictly prohibited.

• Monitor capable of displaying 256 colors or grays at a resolution of 640 x 480 pixels

• At least 3MB of free RAM (the amount of RAM required depends on the number and type of the dynamic media elements incorporated in the project you want to view)
Installing the prerelease version of QuarkImmedia Viewer
1. Copy the QuarkImmedia Viewer 1.0 Beta file to the hard drive of your computer. (You can run QuarkImmedia Viewer directly from the CD, but performance may improve substantially if you run it from your hard drive.)
2. If your currently installed version of QuickTime is earlier than version 2.1, open the Extensions folder located in your System Folder and drag the old version of QuickTime to the Trash.
3. Open the Drag Contents to System Folder folder on the CD.
4. If you do not have version 2.1 (or later) of QuickTime installed, install the new version of QuickTime:
• On a 680x0 Macintosh computer, drag QuickTime from the CD to the Extensions folder in your System Folder.
• On a Power Macintosh computer, drag QuickTime and QuickTime PowerPlug from the CD to the Extensions folder in your System Folder.
5. Drag Sound Manager and Sound onto your System Folder icon. If you already have a copy of either of these files installed, an alert message will be displayed, asking if you want to replace the existing copy of the file. If the installed version of any file is newer than the version on this CD, do not replace the installed version with the version from this CD.
6. If you are using a PowerPC processor-based Mac OS-compatible computer, verify that the AppleScriptLib file is in the Extensions folder in your System folder.
7. Restart your computer.
Using the prerelease version of QuarkImmedia Viewer
After you install QuarkImmedia Viewer, double-click its icon to launch the application. Choose View -> Show Internet Controls to display the QuarkImmedia Internet Controls palette if it is hidden. To connect to a Web site created using QuarkImmedia, type http://www.quark.com/immedia in the Visit field and press Return.
To quit out of a project, type Command-Q or F15.
To improve the performance of QuarkImmedia Viewer, select the application icon in the Finder; choose Get Info from the File menu; and increase the memory allocation for the program.
Making QuarkImmedia Viewer work with your HTML browser
For QuarkImmedia Viewer to work harmoniously with your HTML browser, both applications must be configured properly. To configure QuarkImmedia Viewer:
1. Choose Edit -> Preferences -> Internet to display the Internet Preferences dialog box.
2. Click Specify (next to WWW Browser) to display the Select a Browser directory dialog box.
3. Select your HTML browser and click Open.
To configure your HTML browser:
1. Display the browser preferences dialog box.
2. Create a new entry in the list of helper applications.
3. Give the new entry a MIME (Multipurpose Internet Mail Extensions) type of “application”, a MIME subtype of “immedia” (if applicable), and an extension or suffix of “imd”.
4. Use the Browse button to locate the QuarkImmedia Viewer application.
5. Choose or enter a File Type of ODOC.
6. Indicate that you want to launch QuarkImmedia Viewer when a QuarkImmedia project is encountered. (If you do not make this specification, the browser may simply try to save the project to your hard disk.)
Important note to America Online and CompuServe users
At this time, you cannot use QuarkImmedia Viewer to access QuarkImmedia projects over the Internet through America Online or CompuServe. These services, which use special HTML browsers to permit Internet access, rely on a single IP address that is shared by their users. To use QuarkImmedia Viewer to view projects over the Internet, you need a permanent IP address or Internet access through an Internet provider that supplies you with a “dynamic” IP address while you are connected to the Internet.
